Align in Time is the musical alias of John Boles. He will release his second album, On a Spiral, on June 19, 2020. The album was produced by Bryan Russell (Volbeat, Envy on the Coast, Twin Forks) and mastered by Mike Kalajian (Circa Survive, Saosin, Moving Mountains).
On a Spiral combines the catharsis of post-rock with the immediacy of pop rock and the storytelling approach of a film score. Boles sees its restless transition between moods and genres—from anthemic lead single "Finish It," to the prog-rock explosion of "Headlong," to the aching introspection of closer "I Go Too"—as a reflection of the experiences that informed the music: “I wrote this album to remind me of who and what I love and have lost. And those aren’t isolated emotional events—they recur, they converge and conflict with each other, they’re constantly subject to reinterpretation. I’ve tried to capture that feeling of never having your perspective or your sense of purpose figured out.”
The result is an urgent set of songs with a narrative flow that allows for new discoveries on each listen—among them, thematic ties to Align in Time’s first album, Me & My Arrow, released in 2011. Though, like that album, it never settles in one place for very long, Boles notes a common thread throughout the songs on On a Spiral: “I’ve grown to appreciate in the past eight years that optimism doesn’t endure just by virtue of what it is. It’s something you have to work at. I hope that others can find some inspiration and solace in how that’s conveyed in my music.
