IS/WAS is a three piece instrumental rock band based in the greater Boston area. The three members were 3/4 of the post-rock band Last Builders Of Empire, and decided to carry on under a new name while the founding LBOE guitarist pursues other interests. From a genre standpoint IS/WAS covers a lot of new instrumental ground, drawing on inspiration from latin rhythms, eastern scales, complex time signatures and classical orchestration. Despite the varied influences, the group stays firmly rooted in a traditional rock band format, as a lens to a deeper background. IS/WAS's aim is experimentation through composition, while keeping the sound raw and immediate, to avoid the trappings of delay & effects drenched post-rock.
